Multimedia Vs. Multimodal

+Media is a source of communicating with others in order to get an idea across to people. Usually media is described through a medium such as the newspaper or television programming.
+Multimedia described by dictionary.com as "the combined use of several media", which in example could be a video-game with different dynamics such as cut scenes that describe the story but with music or interactive gameplay.

But I've never heard of the term multimodal until reading about it in Chapter 1: What are Multimodal Projects? To me the description of them seem to be very similar. Multimodal is essentially a communicated expression through various outlets. These outlets can be images, words, musical tones, ext. At first it seems to me that they are one in the same, they both have 'multi' in the name and they both have to do with media being portrayed.
On closer inspection it seems that multimodal has more to do with the mixing of ideas more than media outlets. So multimedia will mix a television show with a cellular phone (ie. smart phones). While on the other hand, multimodal uses subculture ideas that work as media resources. So the example of a meme is to have a visual with a phrase that matches the emotion of the image. It is not itself a television program or necessarily an ad for a company. Multimodal has more to do with the public's response and less of how you come across the idea.

"To Do" Questions pg. 3-7

Linguistics Mode
+ In this statement the linguistic choices that were clear as day were word choice and delivery specifically for me. The use of the words "thoughts and prayers", as well as "we have offered" and "friends" bring more attention to the U.S.A. as a hero even though Japan may even have better resources to rebuild their country than we could provide.

Visual Mode
+ The two profiles seem to be very different. The one on the left feels like there is less dimension and a bit more manly in the color scheme. Depending on if the owner is a man or a woman that may be the intention of the account. The one on the right on the other hand seems to be brighter and a friendlier place to visit. Some people don't have good design skills in making profiles and tend to go overboard on color combinations, which could hinder them from being accepted in their community if they are in a particular business. I chose a fairly creative one off of an app linked to twitter with an artistic Little Red Riding Hood. I love moralistic tales twisted into something dark and disturbing, but it is placed on a white background so it doesn't look dark and obstructive to the viewer.

Aural Mode
+ (The link isn't working for some reason? I'm not sure why but I click on it and it says that there was either an error or the page no longer exists, depending on which link I use.)

Spatial Mode
+ On the www.wsu.edu website the organized use of this mode draws the eye in a bubble. Whether your eye starts at the top or the bottom of the page, your eye travels towards the middle where there are images that slowly change over time leading to different links in the site. Under the pictures are the main links and up at the very top to the right are the links to zzusis and the search menu. If the main focus in the middle were to switch to the stuff on the bottom, the flow of the website might be hindered by there not being something to immediately look at until your eyes finally reached the bottom of the page. This could potentially lose site visitors since that main chunk of links are the most sought after part on the site.

Gestural Mode
+ I chose the video of President Obama congratulating the Summer 2012 Olympics/Paralympics. He makes prolonged eye contact, but that could be easy when the script is on a monitor next to the computer. While his facial features show a lighthearted-ness of being proud of the people who participated in the games as well a friendly tone to let the people know that he isn't disappointed or at all worried about any other political business. His hand gestures tend to point towards the audience as well as himself which includes us in his emotional stand point.
